Can you imagine a day without your smartphone or any electronic gadget? Leave alone a day, say half a day or even an hour? Just the thought might be freaking you out, right? Humans made technology not vice versa. Technology is to ease the life of people, not complicate it further and overtake it completely. There are innumerable things in life to relish, enjoy and appreciate – the beauty of nature, people and relationships, the small pleasures of life, the gift of time and so much more. Technology is and should be only for our convenience and not become a mindless addiction.
The change to stop being a slave to technology must come from within you. You must be internally motivated to break free from the clutches of this addiction and focus on things that matter and people who care. Here are some simple steps to stop being addicted to technology.
Realize that you have a Life outside social media. People usually like to get engrossed in social media to escape the real world. That is never helpful as it is not true. The virtual world is not the truth. Real life, its realities and situations are the truth. It is better to embrace and face them. It is more beneficial to invest your time, money and energy in work, people and things that need you and use the social media in a limited way for knowledge, skills up-gradation, communication and entertainment.
Pursue hobbies that do not require technology. Live a simple and natural life. The simpler and more natural your lifestyle is, the healthier and happier you will be. There are many activities that do not require the use of technology, such as walking, jogging, outdoor sports, cycling, talking face-to-face with people, gardening, cooking, painting, writing, reading, pottery, sculpture and a lot of other creative pursuits that upgrade your skills, are a better use of your time, talent and energy and are something constructive.
Imbibe a social media detox occasionally. Chatting and social media make you more distracted, less focused, less emotional and impersonal. Prefer to pick up the phone and connect with your loved ones that stay far from you and talk personally with those whom you stay with. Take time out to visit relatives and friends and spend quality time with them. The speciality about human beings is the personal touch and warmth, which cannot be replicated by social media communication.
Learn to give focused attention to people. People deserve and crave for attention. It is utter disrespect and lack of self-control to be engrossed in your phone while talking to anyone, personally or professionally. It makes you less empathetic, personal, insensitive and disrespectful, not to mention unfocused and insincere. Keep your smartphone aside for some time and give full attention to the conversation at hand, person or situation. This will not only increase your focus and concentration but also your efficiency. At social functions, enjoy the warmth of people and the fun of gatherings.
Monitor and reduce your social media usage. There are applications that can keep track of the time you are spending on social media. Monitor the usage and time spent on social media, applications and smartphone and make conscious efforts to reduce it significantly. Too much indulgence in electronic gadgets affects the brain, eyes, limbs and even heart. It is like opening the doorway to diseases.
It is ok to mute notifications so that your phone is not constantly buzzing. Learn to mute the notifications on WhatsApp, Facebook, SMS, emails and other applications, so that you are not constantly disturbed. Give full focus, time and attention to the work at hand.
Learn to set goals and prioritize. Prioritize health, family, work, social life and people over gadgets. Goal setting is extremely important for a fruitful and productive life. You will achieve more, feel better, gain more respect and love from people and fulfil the soul agenda of your life. Time is limited and you must make adequate use of your time and prioritize your work, tasks and goals in order to accomplish more.
Uninstall games and applications that take too much of your time. They not only occupy too much space in your phone memory, but also adds clout to your mind along with the physical hazards of radiation. Cut out unnecessary applications that you feel the urge to check and indulge in again and again. Learn to say No with confidence to your own self and do not be bowed down by peer pressure.
Fight the addiction with your will-power. Overpower the urge to be suppressed by FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). Your will-power and mental strength are in your control and you must channelize them and your inner powers to fight these useless addictions. Instead, try to be addicted to good things such as exercise, yoga, sports, Meditation or anything positive.
Set proper timings and limits for your social media usage. Take assistance if required. Limit your social media and electronic gadgets usage. You are the best person to draw the line and follow it.
The above simple steps can make you stop being a slave to technology and can enhance your life, lifestyle, behaviour, personality, communication skills and your outlook towards life.
